Slow start to this year's fishing.  No ice fishing and no early LO fishing.  Just one of those years.
August 15th to 22nd
Sean and I headed to Wawa to spend a week with cousin Igor and fish in the 29th Wawa Salmon Derby.  The west wind started on Sat 14th and didn't stop until Wed 18th.  This gave us a chance to head to a few of Iggie's river hotpots.  Over the course of the next few days, Sean and I picked up some 'eyes, smallies and a big whitefish.  Thursday we finally hit the big lake with cousin Igor.  I have to say, it's quite an interesting ride getting into the lake with the shallow water in the river and the very narrow exit into the lake.  After a couple of hours and checking out the area, we came in empty handed.  Sean and I went out Friday morning before the Derby start and again had no luck.  Friday evening at 5 pm, the Derby started and Team 39 - Sean and I, hit the lake.  During the 4 hours, we encountered a heavy down pour.  With the 5 days of west wind, the warm water piled up at the east end of Superior.  Sean kept working the and changing the lines will I drove the boat (in dry comfort).  Again, we came off empty handed.  Saturday morning we were in the boat at 6:30 am and we worked quite hard all day.  Fishing high and fairly low.  During the mid day, we boated 4 fish of thee 7 releases, the largest was 8.2 lbs.  We ended the day at 8:15 pm.  It was the longest day I've ever spent in the boat.  After getting to bed fairly early and getting up at 5 am, we headed out at 6:10 am.  Again, with the warm water, it was a struggle to find the fish.  Around 8 am, we heard a call on CH 68 that the new leader was 21.55 lbs.  We kept working, changing lures.  Finally around 11 am, we went deep after some marks - 150' down.  Coming back to a hump, Sean raised the rigger from 150 to 140 and the fish hit.  With the fish in the box, we turned back and went to the hump and had another release but couldn't keep it on the line.  Broke lines at 12:50 and headed in as the Derby ended at 1 pm.  In he end, we had a 11.2 lbs fish out of the 2 releases.  It was some tough fishing.  We never had any lake trout and the only 3 lb plus lake trout weighed in came in at 3.1 lbs which netted a prize of $1200 in cash and $800 in prizes.  A nice deal.

I was a great week and I want to thank cousin Igor for his hospitality for putting up with us for the week, especially those two early morning.  Also I want to thank Brad Buck from Buck's Marina and the other sponsors and volunteers at the Derby.  It was a very well organized event with some great prizes  Below are some of the stats.  As stated earlier, it was some tough fishing.  Of the 53 teams entered, only 35 boated fish over the course of the 3 days.  Team 38 - Sean & I feel quite good about our performance.  Congratulations to Real Leclerc and Yolaine Leclerc for their winning 21.55 salmon, and $5500 prize and Gaetan Bergeron and Bob Mann for weighing in the only eligible lake trout - 3.1 lbs.  More info is available at Wawa-news.com.  I also want to congratulate our friends Pierre Blanchard and Paul Blanchard for their 6th place fish.

Maybe next year!

August 2nd
Sean, Steven and I took off to Sparrow Lake for some small rod fishing.  After a bit of s late start, we got to Sparrow Lake about 3 pm. Spent an enjoyable day on the water with most on the productivity coming from jigging from north-east of Margaret Island to the north-east shore line.  Caught quite a few fish keeping 3 walleye, 3 small mouth bass, 3 perch and 1 large mouth bass.
